Victoria, BC is a city of grand landscapes and stunning architecture, but one of its most beloved attractions invites you to think small. Really small. Tucked away in the basement of the iconic Fairmont Empress Hotel, Miniature World has been enchanting visitors for over 50 years with its sprawling collection of meticulously crafted dioramas and displays. If you’re planning a visit in 2025 or 2026, here’s what you need to know about this tiny treasure that has welcomed over 7 million visitors since 1971.
Miniature World is the creation of one man’s passion. It was founded in 1971 by George Devlin, a passionate collector and appraiser of miniatures, during a boom in the hobby craft industry. His background as a collector, including his acquisition of notable pieces from renowned miniaturists Kay and Gordie Hodgson in the 1980s, established the attraction’s reputation for authentic craftsmanship. He established his business in the Empress Hotel, and it has remained a fixture of Victoria’s Inner Harbour ever since.
After 47 years of dedication, Devlin, at the age of 78, sold the business in 2018 to Sarah Angus. Devlin personally approached Angus, believing she was the “natural” choice to carry on his legacy. The attraction continues to operate under a long-term lease with the hotel, ensuring its presence for many years to come.
While every display is a marvel, some are true showstoppers that have earned the attraction its “AAA Rated Gem” status. Don’t miss:
Absolutely not! While children are certainly captivated by the tiny scenes and the interactive buttons that activate movement and lighting effects, adults will be amazed by the incredible craftsmanship, artistry, and historical detail. The exhibits are packed with clever details and historical references that will appeal to all ages. Miniature World also serves as an educational resource, offering unique perspectives on history, geography, and cultural diversity. It’s actively used by schools and educational groups for learning purposes.
For over 50 years, Miniature World has been one of Victoria’s most popular family attractions. Its success lies in its commitment to detail and its ability to transport visitors to other worlds. Each of the 85+ displays is hand-assembled with meticulous attention to detail, and many feature special effects in lighting, sound, and animation. The attraction has earned a TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence Award, a testament to its enduring appeal.
Miniature World is more than just a tourist attraction; it’s a testament to the power of imagination and the beauty of craftsmanship. It’s a place where you can lose yourself in tiny, perfect worlds and appreciate the incredible skill and dedication that went into creating them. With its rich history, commitment to innovation, and a touch of magic, it remains a must-see Victoria experience for visitors in 2025 and 2026.
