The City of Victoria is the core municipality and capital of British Columbia, occupying a small peninsula in the southern part of Vancouver Island. It’s a single municipality that covers just the downtown core and historic districts.

In contrast, Greater Victoria is a much larger metropolitan area that encompasses multiple independent municipalities and regions surrounding the City of Victoria. This includes communities like Oak Bay, Esquimalt, Saanich, Central Saanich, Sidney, Colwood, and Langford, each with its own local government. The region extends from Port Renfrew in the west to the Saanich Peninsula in the east, spanning diverse landscapes across the southern tip of Vancouver Island.

This entire region, often called the Capital Regional District (CRD), is blessed with varied ecosystems – from sandy beaches and rocky coastlines to inland farms, old-growth rainforests, and mountain ranges. The area is renowned for its culinary scene, featuring fresh seafood, farm-to-table restaurants, and a thriving beverage industry including wineries, cideries, and craft breweries.

While tourists often refer to the entire area as “Victoria,” locals distinguish between the City of Victoria proper and the broader Greater Victoria region, understanding them as distinct political and geographical entities that together form a vibrant metropolitan area.
